எல்லாளன் என்ற தமிழ் மன்னன் இலங்கையை 44 ஆண்டுகள் ஆண்டதாக ஆதாரபூர்வமான வரலாறு கூறுகிறது. சிங்களர்கள்தான் இலங்கையின் பூர்வக்குடிகள் என்று நிரூபிப்பதற்காக எழுதப்பட்ட நூல் "மகாவம்சம்.'' சிங்கள வம்சத்தை தோற்றுவித்தவன் விஜயன்தான் என்று அந்நூல் கூறுகிறது. ஆனால், அவன் இலங்கையில் காலடி வைக்கும்போதே, அங்கே குவேனி என்ற தமிழ் அரசி இருந்திருக்கிறாள் என்று அதே மகாவம்சம் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. அப்படியானால், விஜயனுக்கு முன்பே தமிழர்கள் அங்கு வாழ்ந்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை மகாவம்சமே ஒப்புக்கொள்கிறது. அனுராதபுரம் இலங்கையின் மற்ற பகுதிகள் காடுகளாக இருந்தபோது, அனுராதபுரத்தை பெரிய நகரமாக தமிழர்கள் உருவாக்கி, அங்கிருந்து ஆட்சி நடத்தியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்று ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் கூறுகிறார்கள். விஜயன் தனக்கென்று ஒரு ராஜ்ஜியத்தை உருவாக்குவதற்கு முன்பே, அனுராதபுரத்தில் தமிழ் மன்னர்களின் ஆட்சி நடந்திருக்கிறது. விஜயனின் வருகைக்கு சுமார் 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே அனுராதபுரம் பெரிய நகரமாக இருந்திருக்கிறது என்பது, தொல்பொருள் ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் கண்டுபிடிப்பு. அந்தக் காலத்தில் இந்தியாவில் உஜ்ஜயினி பெரிய நகரமாக இருந்தது. அதற்கு சமமாக அனுராதபுரம் இருந்ததாக ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் கூறுகிறார்கள். புகழ் பெற்ற தமிழ் மன்னன் இலங்கைக்கு இந்தியப் பேரரசர் அசோகர் அனுப்பிய புத்த மதக் குழுவினர், அனுராதபுரத்தில் திசையன் என்ற தமிழ் மன்னனை சந்தித்தது பற்றி, பாலி மொழி வரலாற்று நூலில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. திசையன் இறந்த பிறகு, சேனன், குத்தன் என்ற இரு தமிழ் மன்னர்கள் 22 ஆண்டுகள் அனுராதபுரத்தில் நல்லாட்சி நடத்தினர். இவர்களுக்குப் பிறகு ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தவர் எல்லாளன். சிங்களர்களைப் புகழ்வதற்காகவே எழுதப்பட்ட "மகாவம்சம்'' நூலில், எல்லாளனின் வீரம் பற்றி உயர்வாகவே கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவனுடைய குணநலன்கள், மனுநீதிச் சோழனின் இயல்பை ஒட்டி சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. மகாவம்சம் கூறுவதாவது:- "எல்லாளன், இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவுக்கு 235 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னதாகப் பிறந் தவன். அவன் அனுராதபுரத்தைத் தலைநகரமாகக் கொண்டு, 44 ஆண்டுகள் ஆட்சி நடத்தினான். அவன் சோழ வம்சத்தை சேர்ந்தவன். நீதி தவறாதவன். அவன் தன் படுக்கை அறையில் ஒரு மணியை தொங்கவிட்டிருந்தான். அது, அரண்மனைக்கு வெளியே தொங்கவிடப்பட்டிருந்த ஒரு கயிற்றுடன் இணைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தது. தங்களுடைய குறைகளை மன்னருக்குத் தெரிவிக்க, யார் வேண்டுமானாலும், எப்போது வேண்டுமானாலும் மணியை அடிக்கலாம். ஒருமுறை, ஒரு பெண் அந்த மணியை அடித்தாள். எல்லாளன் அந்தப் பெண்ணை அழைத்து, "உன் குறை என்ன?'' என்று கேட்டான். "உன் மகன் ரதத்தில் செல்லும்போது, என் கன்றுக்குட்டி மீது ரதத்தை ஏற்றிக் கொன்றுவிட்டான்'' என்று கூறினாள். அதைக்கேட்ட எல்லாளன், தன் மகனையும் ரதத்தை ஏற்றி கொன்றுவிடுமாறு கட்டளையிட்டான். அக்கட்டளைப்படி இளவரசன் கொல்லப்பட்டான். (மனுநீதி சோழன் வரலாற்றிலும் இதே போன்ற சம்பவம் வருகிறது) புத்தர் கோவில் ஒருமுறை எல்லாளன் ரதத்தில் செல்லும்போது, ரதம் மோதி புத்தர் கோவில் சேதம் அடைந்தது. ரதத்தில் இருந்து கீழே இறங்கிய எல்லாளன், கோவில் இடிந்ததற்காக மிகவும் வருந்தினான். உடனே மந்திரிகளை அழைத்து, "புத்தர் கோவிலை சேதப்படுத்திய நான் படுபாவி; பெரிய குற்றவாளி. என்னைக் கொன்றுவிடுங்கள்'' என்றான். அதற்கு மந்திரிகள் மறுத்துவிட்டனர். "நீங்கள் உங்களுக்கே மரண தண்டனை விதித்துக் கொள்வதை, புத்த பகவானே ஏற்கமாட்டார்'' என்று கூறினர். "நீங்கள் உங்கள் உயிரைப் போக்கிக் கொள்வதற்கு பதிலாக, கோவிலை புதிதாகக் கட்டிக் கொடுத்து விடலாம்'' என்று தெரிவித்தார்கள். மந்திரிகளின் இந்த யோசனையை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட எல்லாளன், புத்தர் கோவிலை முன்பைவிட அழகாகக் கட்டிக் கொடுத்தான். துட்ட காமினி இந்தக் காலக்கட்டத்தில் தென் இலங்கையை கவந்திசா என்ற சிங்கள மன்னன் ஆண்டு வந்தான். அவனுடைய மகன் பெயர் துட்டகாமினி. (இவனுடைய இயற்பெயர் கெமுனு என்றும், துஷ்டத்தனம் செய்து வந்ததால், துட்ட காமினி என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டான் என்றும் மகாவம்சம் கூறுகிறது.) ராஜ்ஜியத்தை விரிவுபடுத்த விரும்பிய துட்டகாமினி, பல சிற்றரசர்களை தோற்கடித்து விட்டு, வடக்கு நோக்கி முன்னேறினான். தமிழ் மன்னன் எல்லாளனை முறியடித்து, அனுராதபுரத்தை கைப்பற்ற வேண்டும் என்பது அவன் எண்ணம். தன் விருப்பத்தை தன் தந்தைக்குத் தெரிவித்தான். அதை மன்னர் ஏற்கவில்லை. Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan says the sequel to 'Vishwaroopam' will come soon in 3D sound format, also known as Auro 3D. After the success of Vishwaroopam, which had utilised the Auro 3D sound technology, Kamal's Vishwaroopam 2 is in the making. The sequel is also likely to be released this year. "We are doing Vishwaroopam 2. We are working on it. We are quite charged up for it. This time the sequel will come in Auro 3D," Kamal Haasan told reporters today. Vishwaroopam was embroiled in a controversy after a section of people demanded a ban on the film's screening, claiming that it hurt the sentiments of a community. Following the protests, the movie was banned from screening across Tamil Nadu and in some other states but was released after few days. The espionage thriller was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 95 crore and has grossed over Rs 220 crore. The sequel will reportedly focus more on mother-son sentiments.

Airtel may stop 3G services in 7 regions

NEW DELHI: The telecom department will ask Bharti Airtel, India's largest mobile phone company, to stop providing third generation (3G) services 'within fifteen days' in seven circles where it does not have frequencies to provide high-end data services, an official aware of the development told ET. The company will also be asked to pay a penalty of 350 crore, or 50 crore in each of the seven regions where it provides 3G services through roaming pacts with its rival operators - Vodafone and Idea Cellular. It is learnt that the telecom department (DoT) is preparing similar notices for Vodafone and Idea Cellular. But, in the case of Bharti Airtel, telecom minister Kapil Sibal has already approved the DoT's move to slap a 350-crore penalty on the telco and will also ask the company to stop offering 3G services outside its licensed zones through roaming pacts. This will be the second notice to Bharti on this issue in recent months. In September 2012, the DoT had asked the company to terminate 3G roaming pacts, that enabled it to sign up high-end data customers across the country even in areas where they did not have third-generation spectrum, and submit compliance reports within three days. Bharti had obtained a stay on the DoT order in the Delhi High Court. In the 2010 auction of 3G airwaves, which brought in higher-than-expected bids, Bharti, Vodafone and Idea had won licences for 13, 9 and 11 circles, respectively. The three incumbent GSM operators then entered into 3G roaming pacts with each other that enabled them to use each other's airwaves and offer 3G services, such as video-calling and high-speed internet on phones seamlessly across the country. The government first issued notices to Bharti, Vodafone and Idea asking them to stop offering third-generation voice and data services outside their licensed zones in December 2011, which resulted in these companies approaching the telecom tribunal, and the two-member bench of the tribunal gave a split verdict in July 2011. Telecom minister Kapil Sibal told ET that the split verdict from the tribunal could not be interpreted as a victory for operators. He also dismissed telcos' claims that the DoT, prior to the 3G auctions, had clearly specified that 'roaming policy is applicable to licences and not specific to spectrum bands'. Mobile phone companies argue that when they had sought clarifications regarding the auctions in 2010, the DoT in its response had said that 'roaming will be permitted'. "For anyone to say they were orally assured, that in itself is suspect. If mature operators have bid for 3G spectrum on such assurances, then they should not be in business. I have seen the replies to queries where operators say we allowed them to offer this facility - you can interpret those replies in any way you want to. How will an entity be allowed to operate in an area in which it doesn't have a licence and even acquire customers from there? Whether it is right or wrong, it is not government against operator - it's what we believe our decision meant," Sibal said. The minister further added that he had told operators several months ago to terminate the roaming pacts they had entered into with each other. "If with open eyes, you are doing something that is not government approved, something that we have not permitted you to do, then you cannot seek relief," Sibal said. On similar lines, the DoT's communication that will be sent to Bharti Airtel, will state that replies to queries prior to the auctions, does not 'create any new rights to the parties'. "It has also been made clear that the documents is for information purpose only and has no binding force. 3G is a standalone service and not an extension of or in continuation of 2G spectrum, is clear from the Notice Inviting Applications conditions," states the draft DoT communication to Bharti, a copy of which was seen by ET. The Bharti spokesperson did not comment on the DoT's plan.

MUMBAI: Subscribers to Airtel digital TV and IPTV could be in for a rude shock come 22 March. They could well be watching a blank screen instead of action between the Indians and the Ozzies during the fourth test of the ongoing test series. The reason: ESPN Software India has announced that it is going to pull the plug on not only Star Cricket and Star Sports (the channels that are telecasting the Test series) but also ESPN (that has EPL action). The sports network posted a notice on 1 March stating that it would deactivate the channels on the DTH and IPTV platforms within the next 21 days due to Bharati Telemedia and Bharti Airtel's "non-signing of agreements and breach of statutory obligations." In late 2012, Airtel digital TV had de-activated ESPN and Star Cricket HD channels from its platform citing prohibitive prices of the two channels. This is something that ESPN Software has objected to saying that the pricing of the HD channels is right keeping in mind the target audience that is expected to subscribe to them. The sportscaster had added that channels were being carried by two other DTH players - Videocon d2h and Tata Sky. Clearly, the two have been hard eyeballing each other for a while now. Viewers are waiting to see who will blink first.
